Your Science-based Link to Nutrition and Health… California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is a not-for-profit membership association of approximately 6,500 registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), nutrition dietetic technicians registered (NDTRs), and students committed to improving California’s health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education, and advocacy.

Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RD/RDNs) are highly educated and trained health professionals who provide nutrition education and dietetic services. All RD/RDNs have at the minimum a bachelor’s degree, have completed a qualifying internship, passed a national registration examination, and complete ongoing continuing education.

Founded in 1924 with sixty-one members, the California Dietetic Association (currently California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) became an affiliate of the national American Dietetic Association (currently Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) in 1927. This relationship remains in existence today. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly American Dietetic Association) members who reside in California comprise the membership of the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The primary purpose of the California Academy is to champion policies and regulations that:

  • protect consumers of nutrition services
  • endorse a strong scope of practice of RDNs and NDTRs in California
  • support the roles of RDNs and NDTRs in the delivery of healthcare in California
  • ensure and promote informed food decisions by the public

Members work in a variety of areas including hospitals, research facilities, public health, and other community agencies, colleges and universities, health and fitness centers, school districts, private practice, corporate America, and with the media.

Comprehensive leadership and direction of the California Academy are provided by the ten-member Executive Board which is made up of elected and ex-officio members. Councils led by Executive Board member-elected Vice Presidents provide additional guidance of the affairs of  California Academy.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The Academy was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917, by a visionary group of women dedicated to helping the government conserve food and improve the public’s health and nutrition during World War I. Today, the Academy has members in over 80 countries throughout the globe—registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN); nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered (NDTR); and other dietetics professionals holding undergraduate and advanced degrees in nutrition and dietetics; and students—and is committed to improving the public’s health and advancing the profession of nutrition and dietetics through research, education, and advocacy.
