Fall 2021

Dear California Academy Members:

I want to express my gratitude in having the privilege of being your president and to be able to provide the latest updates from your CA Academy and the entire executive board.

The Executive Board has selected a new Executive Director after an extensive search for the candidate that best fits the needs of the California Affiliate.

Please join me in welcoming Carrie Der Garabedian, MBA, RDN, CFPM as our Executive Director. Carrie is a veteran Registered Dietitian with a wealth of management experience. Her tenure as a 20+ year food service director led her to a multitude of accomplishments including starting a hospital catering off-site business, assisting with the first annual Madera County Pomegranate Festival, managing a 7-department $2.5 million dollar budget and broadcasting live cooking demonstrations on a local television station. Carrie has been a long-time volunteer with the CA Academy and her local district.  She has held multiple dietetic leadership positions which include past Central Valley President, CA Academy Secretary Treasurer and currently serves on the Academy State Policy Landscape Task Force. Her work history, leadership expertise, warm and genuine personality make her a perfect fit to help guide us through our CA Academy work for many years to come. Carrie has spent the last two months as interim director for the CA Academy and is ready for the challenge and fun.  Welcome Carrie!

The Executive Board also welcomes Matthew J. Landry, PhD, RDN as our appointed Secretary Treasurer through May 31, 2021. Matt moved here from Texas to pursue a Post Doctoral Fellowship at Stanford University in Nutrition and Health Promotion. He is also an elected general member of the Academy Legislative and Public Policy Committee.  Please welcome Matt to our California Affiliate and the Executive Board!

Congratulations to our very own Linda Gigliotti, MS, RDN, CDCES, CSOWM, FAND for receiving the Academy Medallion Award, the highest award a member can receive.  The Medallion Award goes to members who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to the profession over a long period of time. Linda has contributed countless hours to the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group. In addition to her DPG work, Linda has given time to CDR, serving as a CDR Commissioner from 2016-2019 and ultimately serving as CDR chair from 2018 – 2019. Linda values the profession, supports the Academy, and demonstrates the traits of a true leader. Her acceptance video is highlighted on the Academy’s member-facing YouTube. She will also be featured on our website.

Please HOLD the DATE April 21-23, 2022, so you can attend our Annual Conference at the Oakland Marriott. The theme, Innovative Practices and Approaches to Building a Resilient Food System, will be our first in person conference in over two years. We are working to provide a hybrid conference by offering it live April 21-23 and then virtually the following week. Please stay tuned for details. Registration will begin in early December:  https://dietitian.org/annual-conference/

Our Councils have been working diligently to enhance and accomplish their respective goals for the year as well as providing added member services. Here is a quick snapshot of their many activities.

Public Policy Council – continues to bring legislative updates to all via the ‘Take Action Now’ bulletins.

The CA Academy has been asked to collaborate with and provide financial support for the Campaign for Equity in Obesity Care (CEOC). The CEOC is working hard to support this important state initiative as well as the Federal Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA).  The executive board is deciding on the best means for the CA Academy to support this important campaign.  More to come on this campaign.

Thanks to member efforts Congress and the Senate heard your calls to action for the Build Back Better (BBB) Act and decided to keep many of the historic nutrition provisions in the most recent iteration of the BBB Framework. Although we are far from our $35 billion-dollar initial amount, we have negotiated a $10 billion inclusion of child nutrition provisions. It is still a historic moment in child nutrition, and we continue to build up great momentum.

Education Council – The Education Council has created a video to help with taking the RDN exam – this is free to all.  Please visit our website for the helpful RDN registration exam prep:  RD PREP EXAM-20210514 0100-1

IDEA  Council– is continuing to evolve and grow.  We need and ask for your help and input in this important new Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access Council.  Please contact Dr. Dorothy Chen at Dchen@csusb.edu to volunteer.

Communications Council – is working on a monthly content calendar that will facilitate social media posting and communication. The CSU, Fresno Dietetic Interns will be assisting with this project. The LinkTr.ee program was added to our Instagram social media platform to provide enhanced communication with all of our membership.

Membership Benefits Council  – is working to elevate the RDN profile by making virtual and in person presentations targeting community colleges and their students. The council has a goal of expanding to all grades of schools as well as many community opportunities to educate the communities on our profession and the opportunities available as a registered dietitian nutritionist as well as dietitian technician registered.
CA Delegates
– The HOD Delegates retained the authority to vote on future bylaws amendments and “to the Academy membership”.  Due to member input, this vote of the House of Delegates, the HOD will continue to approve the AND bylaws. See the 10/27/21 email for the latest HOD information.

Please remember to submit your applications for district, state and Academy Awards by November 8, 2021. https://dietitian.org/awards/

Los Angeles and Coastal Tri Counties have transitioned to regions. The activities and events that are provided by the region will now be offered state-wide and we welcome all CA Academy members to participate.  Check https:/dietitian.org for event activities.

Thank you to the Executive Board and their council members for making the CA Academy thrive.

The Executive Board and I wish you all the best during the upcoming holidays. May your holidays be safe and filled with love, warmth, good cheer, fun, laughter and happiness throughout the New Year!

See you at our CA Academy Annual Conference in Oakland April 21-23, 2022!

With Much Gratitude,

Monica J. McCorkle, MS, RDN, CDCES, NBC-HWC
