A Message from the President
Dear Members and Friends of California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:
As I wind down my term, I want to share some of my thoughts as the President of California Academy. First of all, on the formation of our new Inclusive, Diversity, Equity, and Access (I.D.E.A.) Council. We are putting resources to support this and other councils to support and ensure that our professional organization takes this issue seriously.
As we celebrate the Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (APIDA) Heritage month in April, we also need to be mindful of the hatred against APIDA communities by some individuals who do not share our ideas. As much as many of us appreciate our freedom and independence living in this great nation, systemic and social racism, unfortunately, still exists. Therefore, we must work hard to remove systemic racism, barriers, and stigmatism that are put there to suppress people. Also, we need to be aware of any “-ism” labels that we may unintentionally put on people.
Even though we cannot control the behavior of people in the whole nation, we can try our best to provide inclusion, equity, and access to our profession. If we can do this, I can assure you that diversity will follow when people feel safe to be part of our organization and profession. Therefore, I ask all of you to do your part to include and treat everyone with fairness, respect, and equity. If we support each other, we can be one giant force to be reckoned with rather than being picked off as an individual.
Practice your rights as a citizen and a member of our profession (past, present, and future practitioners). Pay it forward as a volunteer for the profession, I do know that we are all busy and our workload and responsibilities have increased. I ask that if you can spare one hour a month, we have tasks for you to do. Your district also needs help; so, contact your district leaders to see what you can do for them. Get involved in your district, step up as a leader, build your team and start a project for your community. Interns and students, the volunteer hours and tasks completed look good on your resume.
In October, CA Academy will be asking districts to submit nominations for awards. Please help us recognize our many colleagues who are doing great things to advance our organization, community, and profession. The call for awards will be going out in August so be thinking of individuals, who we can recognize at the state and national levels, for their contribution and service.
In late summer, nominating committee members will be contacting individuals to serve as leaders of our organization. We will be electing the President-elect, Secretary/Treasurer, Delegates, VP of Membership Benefits and Services, and nominating committee. Also,
VOTE, VOTE, VOTE in the first two weeks in February in the Academy and CA Academy elections. Please exercise your right to vote and help us raise the % of members who voted in our elections. Unfortunately, our voter turnouts in the Academy and CA Academy were in the low teens, and with approximately 7,000 members, we should have a very, very loud voice. Instead, we whimper…. I would love to see at least 50% voter turnout, and let’s work on that, everyone!!!
We cannot stand on the sideline and watch the world go by, we need to be a part of the action and make a lot of noise. If we see someone being a bully, stop them!! Get others involved and do it together, so the bully can be stopped. If one witnesses social injustice or racism, be an interrupter; but be aware of your own safety. Be a part of the change movement; if everyone gets involved, we can do ANYthing!!
We can overcome the fear, hatred, and unknowns through education, understanding, and support of each other. Together, we win; divided, we fall…. It has been a difficult and challenging year; and going forward, I hope that we can be civil, respectful, and treat everyone in a way better than how we want to be treated. It is not a perfect world, but we can do our part to make it better. I am very proud of our members, and everyone should feel empowered to do their best because we have a great past and a strong future ahead of us.
If there is anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me, email@example.com.
Dear California Academy Members,
You recently received communication from the California Academy President, Monica McCorkle and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on the proposed Governance Structure Model.
As your California Delegates, we want to provide more clarification on the proposal. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Academy), Board of Directors (BOD) is proposing changes that will significantly affect the structure of the Academy and your voice in the governance of the Academy. Please read this summary and respond to the BOD survey by July 31, 2021. You will be asked to include a reason for your vote.
The proposed changes were not discussed with or planned with input from the House of Delegates (HOD). We first learned of the proposal on June 14th, 2021.
There are several proposed changes:
- Currently, the House of Delegates (HOD) is responsible for making revisions to the Bylaws. The Board of Directors of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is recommending an amendment to the Bylaws in which the Board of Directors (BOD) will take ownership of future Bylaw revisions, without the consent of the House of Delegates. To review the proposed changes click here. The BOD will then be able to make changes to the Bylaws without the current checks and balances provided by your HOD representation.
- Dissolve the House of Delegates (HOD). Currently there are 113 delegates representing you as an Academy member. Current representation includes: 6 House Leadership Team Members; 66 State Delegates (5 from CA) ; 27 Dietetic Practice Group (DPG) Delegates; 7 Member Interest Group (MIG) Delegates; 7 At-Large Delegates.
- The proposed changes would dissolve the House of Delegates and create a Strategic Council of 15The 15 member Strategic Council will represent the 100,000 + Academy members. It is unknown, at this time, how the Strategic Council members will be nominated or appointed.
- The Council on Future Practice (CFP) will be dissolved and absorbed into the 15 member Strategic Council. The CFP has the interest and evolution of our profession and practice as their focus. They have in the past conducted and published the extensive visioning report every five years.
- Reduce the size of the BOD from 19 members to 14 members.
The Avenue M report used by the Academy and task force states that it benchmarked against other organizations and found that many of them were moving to the Council model. After careful research, it was found that there are many professional organizations like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that continue to effectively use a House of Delegates. Some of these organizations include the American Physical Therapy Association, American Dental Association, American Nurses Association (Membership Assembly) and the American Medical Association. In some of these associations the House of Delegates is larger than our HOD and they all have the by-laws as part of their responsibilities.
As your California Delegates, we are strongly opposed to these changes for several reasons. The HOD provides broad, equitable representation BOTH geographically and through DPGs and now MIGs with an objective election process. The current HOD model provides the Academy a diverse VOICE that effectively reflects member experiences, subject-matter expertise, geographic differences and experiences and diverse member needs. Secondly, the Academy need checks and balances. The balance of power will be lost with the elimination of the HOD. The governing members of both the BOD and Strategic Council could become a process of “self- selection” with appointed versus member elected positions.
We encourage you to reach out to us with your comments and/or concerns and provide feedback. Our contact information can be found at Our Leadership | California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (dietitian.org).
