Food Allergies: Counseling Patients Through The Lifecycle with Sherry Coleman Collins

Tuesday, October 18th at 5pm on Zoom (registration closes Sunday October 16th)

CEU: 1.0 unit

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Counsel patients on evidence-based approaches to diagnosing food allergies.
  2. Provide basic “survival skills” education for patients with food allergies.
  3. Incorporate the latest guidelines for food allergy prevention.

In this session, Sherry Coleman Collins will review the role of the registered dietitian nutritionist in food allergy diagnosis and management. She will share the latest guidelines and resources for prevalence, the different types of food allergies and adverse reactions, keys to providing meaningful nutrition education for individuals and families, and the latest in food allergy prevention. This session will be a high-level overview of food allergy work for the RDN with recommendations for deeper learning. Goal of the presentation will be to give an overview of food allergy patient education and care and address common misconceptions and provide resources for dietitians who want to learn more.

Speaker Bio:

Sherry Coleman Collins is a Marietta, GA based registered dietitian nutritionist with more than 15 years’ experience in food allergies, pediatric clinical nutrition, school foodservice and nutrition communications. She has spoken at dozens of professional conferences, is a frequent guest and freelance writer, and serves as an expert to the media. She spearheaded the developed the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Certificate of Training in Food Allergies and authored the Academy’s Practice Paper on the Role of the RDN in Food Allergy Diagnosis and Management. She has completed the FARE Pediatric Food Allergy Certificate of Training. Sherry works with the National Peanut Board helping to provide reliable and science-based information about peanuts, including peanut allergies, for professionals and consumers. She is married to Mr. Peanut, and is raising one robot-obsessed boy, a dog and four chickens. Find her via @PeanutRD on social media.
