Position: Dietary Services Supervisor

Job Description: Under general direction, plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates all aspects of the food and nutritional care programs, activities, and personnel at the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC), Santa Paula Hospital, and Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. The incumbent will be responsible for planning and supervising the work of clinical nutrition, food production services, supervisory and clerical staff.
Educational Incentive: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of a Master’s degree that is not required for the classification.
Bilingual Incentive: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency exam.
Staff/Services Specialist I is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) Regular position.

First Review of Applications: Week of January 30th, 2023 Examples Of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Supervises, oversees, plans, and reviews the work and activities of Registered Dietitians and Technicians, and Food Services personnel engaged in performing clinical nutrition and food production services; Monitors and confirms that the appropriate food service quality assurance system and control records are maintained, and that established procedures are followed; Documents performance improvement projects for the Food and Nutrition Services department; Interviews, hires, trains, conducts performance reviews, and disciplines Food and Nutrition Services personnel as needed; Provides competency testing of employees at Ventura County Medical Center Food & Nutrition Services and clinics as required by Federal and State laws; Assists Registered Dietitians with patient care as needed; Directs Dietary Aides on processing diet orders and menu adjustments for patients on regular and special diets; Plans, organizes, and conducts ongoing in-service educational training programs; Approves schedules and assignments and sets priorities for the department to ensure maximum utilization of personnel to provide adequate coverage in processing the work; Consults with physicians and health care personnel to determine nutritional needs and diet restrictions of patients and recommends changes; Develops, reviews, and updates the dietetic policies and procedures manual to ensure adherence to Federal, State, and accreditation standards; Prepares, analyzes, assesses, and approves new patient menus for therapeutic and cultural diets; Advises hospital administration on Food and Nutrition Services reports; Acts as a liaison between Food and Nutritional Services, clinical nutrition, medical/nursing staff, and hospital administration; Answers inquiries from other staff, members of the public, vendors, and contractors regarding the services provided; Investigates and resolves problems related to the line operation’s service or contractor/vendor performance; Compiles and analyzes data to determine operational requirements, set benchmarks, and measure work performance; Performs special projects as requested by management and prepares related reports, findings, and recommendations; Maintains a variety of records and produces management reports using automated systems, manuals, and other reference materials; and Performs other related duties as required.

Education, Training, and Experience
Considerable progressively responsible operations, project or staff experience related to the reporting level, the complexity of work performed, and other requirements leading to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position. An example of qualifying education, training, and experience is:
Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related field AND Five (5) years of experience as a Registered Dietitian or experience in hospital food management, which should include significant experience in large-quantity food production, recipe development, and operation experience in leading and training supervisors and food production staff.
Necessary Special Requirements:
**Must possess and maintain current registration/credentials with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
**Must complete continuing education units (CEUs) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration requirements for the credential of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist as a condition of continued employment.
Other Requirements:
This position may be subject to State Health Officer Orders regarding vaccine verification and/or testing. These requirements are a condition of employment. Depending on assignment and work location(s), successful candidates for this position will be required to submit proof of vaccination and/or booster against COVID-19 or request an exemption for qualifying medical or religious reasons during the onboarding process.

Experience in developing, reviewing, and updating dietetic policies and procedure manuals to ensure adherence to Federal, State, and accreditation standards.
Current registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working to considerable knowledge of: planning, organizing, and operations of a large food service program; principles and practices of effective supervision; the use of automated systems; planning, organizing, and directing work to meet workload demands; project and time management techniques and tools; work processes/methods related to the specific assignment; budget preparation and monitoring; and, researching and interpreting codes, regulations, and policies related to the agency/department and those related to public/customer relations techniques; specialization in principles and practices of nutrition science, quality and quantity food preparation and service, pricing and portion controls, food ordering and storage, food handling techniques, and the laws and regulations governing institutional-based nutrition.
Ability to: apply and interpret all policies, procedures, and operations of the Agency’s Food and Nutrition Services Department; supervise staff and administer various projects; exercise independent judgment; explain department policies and procedures and serve as departmental resource and liaison; develop and implement necessary work processes and related procedures; perform statistical analysis and data interpretation and reports; assist in developing or enhancing office automation applications; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; manage projects, grants or contracts; understand the unit’s goals; draw logical conclusions and make appropriate recommendations or adjustments as needed; organize and prioritize work assignments; read and interpret technical material; and, complete required forms accurately and completely.
